Online Course Interaction Policy

In compliance with the Department of Education guidelines regarding regular substantive interactions in distance education courses (see here: https://teaching.resources.osu.edu/keep-teaching/regular-substantive-interaction-online; https://wcet.wiche.edu/frontiers/2021/08/26/rsi-refresh-sharing-our-best-interpretation-guidance-requirements/), as well as to track the attendance and participation of students enrolled in online courses, William Woods has developed the following policy:

All online courses must include at least four interactions per week which can be tracked on the Learning Management System. For purposes of this policy, interactions are recorded when a student:

a) uploads an assignment to the LMS

b) takes a quiz

c) makes an original post to a discussion board; or,

        d) responds to a peer’s post on a discussion board. Work completed on external sites (GoReact, Perusall, et al.) do not count as recorded interactions unless students are required to interact with the LMS in one of the recordable ways noted above.

Certain types of courses—dissertation continuation, fieldwork and internship courses, and other explicitly noted courses—do not require four interactions per week. The number and format of interactions for these courses will be determined on a course-by-course basis.

A list of those courses which do not require four interactions per week can be found here: Exceptions to Four Interactions
