Attendance Policy
Traditional Seated Classroom Courses
Programs of instruction at William Woods University require regular attendance and active student participation in classes, laboratories, and applied instruction. In support of this, all classes will have an attendance policy, as described by the faculty member in the course syllabus. Students attending University-sanctioned events are not to be counted as unexcused; however, students are expected to notify instructors in advance and make up all work within the time specified by the instructor. For all absences, it is the student's responsibility to meet with the instructor and make up any work missed.
Online Courses:
The online model of instruction requires active student participation for successful completion of the course/program. All work will be due on the original due date (unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor).
Student weekly attendance in online courses will be credited by completion of at least two activities per week in the LMS.
Acceptable activities for attendance in an online course include:
- Student submission of an academic assignment.
- Student submission of an examination, quiz, or test.
- Documented student participation in an interactive tutorial or computer-assisted instruction.
- A posting by the student in a discussion forum showing the student's participation in an online discussion about academic matters. Can include original postings or replies.
- An inquiry from the student or other documentation within the LMS/online classroom showing that the student-initiated contact with a faculty member to ask a question about an academic subject studied in the course.
- A posting by the student showing the student's participation in an online study group that is assigned by the institution.
In a distance education context, documenting that a student has logged into an online class is not sufficient, by itself, to demonstrate academic attendance by the student" (Federal Student Aid Handbook, 2016, p. 886).
