HIS 234 United States Labor History I: The Young Republic to the Populist Movement

This five-week course explores the transformation of work in the United States from the early Republic through the Gilded Age. We will examine the shift from agrarian and artisanal labor to industrial capitalism, the centrality of enslaved labor to the national economy, and the radical upheavals that defined the late 19th-century labor movement.
