ICS 530 Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Education: Pre-Roman Empire
This course explores the origins and development of educational thought and practice in civilizations prior to the rise of the Roman Empire. Students will examine the educational systems of ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and other early societies, analyzing how education was shaped by cultural, religious, and philosophical influences. The course will highlight key thinkers such as Confucius, Plato, and Aristotle, as well as the role of oral traditions, apprenticeship models, and institutional schooling. Through primary texts and historical analysis, students will gain insight into how early educational philosophies laid the groundwork for later Western and global traditions in teaching and learning.
